Chengdu (成都, Chéngdū) is a city of 21 million people that somehow still feels like it's on a long lunch break. The capital of Sichuan (四川, Sìchuān) province sits on a humid, misty plain ringed by mountains, and the local temperament matches the weather: slow, damp, unbothered. Office workers finish at six and go straight to a teahouse to play cards under camphor trees. Retirees fill People's Park with dancing and matchmaking boards. Nobody appears to be in a hurry, which after Beijing or Shanghai lands somewhere between charming and disorienting.
What you actually come for is a triple bill: giant pandas at the world's most famous breeding base, food that has earned Chengdu a UNESCO City of Gastronomy title, and the teahouse-and-alley culture that makes the gaps between meals just as good. The mala (麻辣, málà) combination of chili heat and Sichuan pepper numbness turns up in noodles at ¥10 ($1.40) and in hot pot broths that will genuinely test you. The city is also the natural launchpad for Tibetan-fringe Sichuan, Leshan's Giant Buddha and the panda-adjacent countryside at Dujiangyan.

Best time to visit: March–May and September–November. Summer is hot, humid and crowded; winter is grey and around 5–10°C but rarely freezing. Chengdu's famously overcast sky means sunny photos are a matter of luck year-round.
Getting around: The metro is the answer — 13+ lines, fares ¥2–8 ($0.30–1.10), signage and announcements in English. Pay by scanning Alipay or WeChat Pay's transit QR code; no cash needed. DiDi rides across the center run ¥15–35 ($2–5), and shared bikes (Meituan, HelloBike) are everywhere and legitimately useful on flat streets. Chengdu Tianfu International Airport (天府机场) is 50km out — take Metro Line 19 or the airport bus, roughly an hour. The older Shuangliu Airport is on Line 10, 30 minutes from downtown.
Where to stay: Chunxi Road (春熙路) for shopping, metro interchanges and late food. Kuanzhai Alley / Renmin Park for old-city walkability and teahouses. Wuhou / Jinli for temple-and-lantern atmosphere, quieter at night. Yulin (玉林) for the bars, cafés and where locals actually eat.
Classic 3-day shape: Day 1 — panda base at opening, then Wenshu Monastery and a hot pot dinner. Day 2 — Wuhou Shrine, Jinli, Jinsha or Sichuan Museum, evening face-changing opera. Day 3 — People's Park teahouse morning, Kuanzhai Alley snacks, or swap in a Leshan or Dujiangyan day trip.
